Implementation of Required Prescription Monitoring Program Checks Delayed Until March

House Bill (HB) 3284, by Representative J. D. Sheffield, was passed by the 86th Texas Legislature at the end of the legislative session. One of the key elements of the bill delayed the implementation of the requirement for prescribers to check the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) prior to prescribing opiates, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or carisoprodol. Under current law, the requirement to check the prescription monitoring program prior to prescribing any of these types of drugs was set to go into effect on September 1. Representative Sheffield’s bill will delay implementation of that requirement until March 1, 2020.

All advanced practice registered nurses who prescribe opiates, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or carisoprodol must check the PMP before prescribing any of these types of drugs beginning March 1, 2020. Although Board Rules state the requirement becomes effective September 1, the Board will delay implementation consistent with the provisions of HB 3284.
