- In order to maintain a Texas APRN license and prescriptive (RX) authority, you must maintain a privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Texas. Privilege to practice is maintained by holding either a current Texas RN license or valid multistate (compact) RN license in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) participating state in which you permanently reside.
- For APRNs who hold a Texas RN license, the APRN license and RX authority will expire at the same time as the RN license. Both licenses must be renewed at the same time in order to continue practicing as an APRN in Texas. You will also be able to renew your RX authority, if applicable, through completion of the renewal of your Texas RN and APRN licenses.
- Your licenses and RX authority will always expire on the last day of your birth month and in an odd-numbered year for those born in an odd-numbered year and an even-numbered year for those born in an even-numbered year. Usually your APRN license and RX authority is valid for a 2-year period and renewal is required every 2 years. (copied and pasted from below because it is applicable here as well)

- For APRNs who hold a multistate RN license in their compact home state, your Texas APRN license and RX authority expiration date will be based on your birth month and year. Thus, your APRN license and RX authority will always expire on the last day of your birth month and in an odd-numbered year for those born in an odd-numbered year and an even-numbered year for those born in an even-numbered year. Usually your APRN license and RX authority is valid for a 2-year period and renewal is required every 2 years; however, the initial licensing period may range from 6-29 months.
- Texas-licensed APRNs who hold a multistate RN license in another compact state are required to renew their license by mail. A renewal application form will be mailed to your mailing address on record with the Board within sixty (60) days of the expiration date of your license
- As you will not be able to renew your Texas APRN license online, it is imperative that you keep your address on record with the Board up to date. Please also note that Board Rule 217.7 requires a licensee to notify the Board in writing within ten (10) days of a change of address. - Rule 221 outlines the requirements for maintaining your APRN license some of which include:
- Practicing a minimum of 400 hours each biennium in your role and population focus area;
- Completing a minimum of 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education targeted for your role and population focus area each biennium or attaining, maintaining, or renewing your national certification;
- Completing an additional 5 contact hours in pharmacotherapeutics if you have prescriptive authorization;
- Completing an additional 3 contact hours related to prescribing controlled substances (if you have prescriptive authority and prescribe these types of medications)

- Please be advised that for any Texas APRN license that is less than two (2) years old at the time of renewal (i.e. the first or initial APRN license renewal), the renewal requirements for targeted continuing education and 400 hours of practice in the APRN role and population focus area are waived. If there is any question when you are ready for renewal, the above information is also included with the instructions for licensure renewal; you may access the paper application form on our website to review these instructions at any time. - For APRNs who hold a current Texas RN license please note that if the APRN CE and practice hours are waived, but your Texas RN license is beyond the first renewal, then you must have a minimum 20 contact hours of continuing education as applicable and outlined in Rule 216 .3 for your RN license renewal.

- It is essential to remain familiar with the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) and Board Rules and Regulations related to your practice. As changes occur, notices are published in the Texas Board of Nursing Bulletin as well as the BON website.
